Welcome to the George Town Cruising Regatta website. Thanks for stopping by.   We hope you will enjoy seeing the goings on at last years regatta as much as we had doing the fun things you will see in the pictures that follow.

We had a great time and great weather again this year. The races were exciting and very well attended by both racers and watchers. We had a great committee boat and even a finishing cannon for the best yachts in the fleet.

Opening night, under a full moon, was one of the best. American Bandstand was the theme and everyone got into the mood. This years theme will be Under the Boardwalk.

With twenty two events we hope that we have something for everyones enjoyment. If you dont come see, youve missed the fun. A schedule of the events is included here somewhere, by our cruising web site creator Rick and Tammy Jones on Pelago.

There are also a lot of bridge of dinghies from Volleyball beach to the town dock at Regatta Point. We got lucky and the Army showed up and took some pictures from on high. Dont forget daily Volleyball for both novice and experts. Also, beach walks, exercise periods, softball and Women Aboard. Seems like something for everyone, if you want to participate. You can even take your code practice classes to get ready for the exam.

Each year boaters visiting the Bahamas hold a regatta in George Town, Exuma. This year, the 22nd annual Georgetown Cruising Regatta will be held March 15 to the 24th. Boats converge on this beautiful location from all over North America, South America and Europe for this week long, fun event. During last years regatta there were over 400 boats present representing 1000 visitors.

The Regatta is preceded by a party given by the Georgetown residents and businesses. Local residents participate in many of the events and are welcome to all activities. The community is Georgetown is one of the many reasons to be in this area.

Each year the boaters, in conjunction with local government, provide volunteer support for the community improvements. In 2002 we will be helping to build a concession stand for year round use in Regatta Park. The cruisers have built a bandstand, picnic tables and other facilities for use by both the community and the cruisers. Manpower is volunteered as well as financial support.

The boats generally begin arriving in November with the peak occurring for Regatta. Many boaters stay over to attend the Family Island Regatta held each April in George Town. This event provides the cruisers the opportunity to get a taste of true Bahamian culture and enjoy one of the major events in the Bahamas. Both the cruising Regatta and the Family Island Regatta benefit from being held in the same location. Each year the Cruising Regatta makes a donation to the Family Island Regatta. A contribution is planned for this year as well.

Many of the boaters return to every winter to stay in George Town for the winter, while other boats make this an important stop when traveling on South or returning from the Caribbean. Regardless of where they have been, boaters return to George Town make the comment, "it doesn't get any better than this" and see you next year".
