Back in the very early 80's I ran a BBS on my TRS-80 named Fred. (The "red" was ridiculous electronic device. Considerable latitude was allowed the meaning of the first letter.) The BBS was mostly a local message board, but we also had a ton of public domain software. In keeping with the spirit of the original Software Works BBS, here are some links to sources of shareware.
